I must admit I might be addicted to facebook. Â It’s a silly way to keep track of friends, past friends and relatives etc. It also is filled with useless games and constant interaction… From a web 2.0 perspective its pure genius and I guess thats why the founder is now a billionaire or number 785 on Forbes. And while on that subject for the 39th straight year I am not on the list. Facebook is a simple way to keep track of people using a very viral method.
I have been a member for a while less than a year and I have become addicted. I will pull it up and see what my friends and associates are doing. Reading their status updates, looking at their photos or links or whatever. I gawk through their friend lists looking for people I know or knew at one time and often adding those friends by request. I guess its a security feature but I just hate people that don’t have open profiles. Adding friends is also a method of powering up on silly games like Mobwars. Nothing kills a crappy day at work like earning silly points on a pointless game. I wish I had the drive to write myself a silly app and make money off of facebook. To quote the Cure… “I guess my time has come another thing undone.”
All this updating of status and pages got me to thinking… Maybe I am a Cyber-Voyeur. I enjoy looking at Facebook pages, myspace pages and blogs of people I know… Maybe I am a sicko.  I might have a problem… I might be… a cyber stalker. No I just enjoy reading about what is happening in my friends lives, always have always will. If only I were better at using the phone to talk to these friends and staying in touch better.
It is interesting to see business that have been smart enough to take this technology and use it to boost their business. Paul Allen’s business (its not the Paul Allen but another) has used it quite well. (see World Vital Records / familyhistorylink) He even shares some of his favorite facebook apps.
I think that Facebook is just a site that is the pong of the internet 2.0. Video games have traveled a far distance since the days of pong but pong was where it all started. It shall be exciting to see what the next interation of the web is… I can’t wait.
