With all the fear of Pork lately I couldn’t resist.
Is anyone really surprised by Arlen Specters defection from the Republican Party? No! The megalomaniac sees he job disappearing. Specter’s meal ticket aka his cushy job in Washington was about to disappear. This is a desperate attempt by a desperate man.
Specter is up for re-election in 2010. He had already announced he planned to run. On March 18, 2009, Specter said, “To eliminate any doubt, I am a Republican, and I am running for re-election in 2010 as a Republican on the Republican ticket.” Since then it has become apparent that his chances of winning the Republican primary are bleak. Recent polls show him trailing by over 14 points.
How do you win an election where you are losing badly? Change political parties. How do you become important, relevant and get media attention? Change political parties.
It appears to me that Specter took a deal with the devil in order to try to get re-elected by leaving the party that got his ass elected 5 times. Specter has sold all the Republicans who have helped him over the last 30 years and sold them down the river. Specter star suddenly rose out of the ashes of politics like a phoenix when the Dems realized that he would be the filibuster proof majority the Democrats need. Even the President was paying him the love this morning.

That sums it up nicely.
The part that I find interesting is that “He has never been in the Senate to fight for any particular party, but rather for the men and women of Pennsylvania who sent him here. “ Pennsylvania sent you as a Republican not a Democrat. Doesn’t that matter? The people sent you as something else.
My thoughts on this are Arlen Specter is s desperate man. He is about to lose his job even though he has been in office since 1980.
Why not just retire? You can leave with dignity. I think he hopes to re-invent his political career by selling out to the opposition. In reality all he has become is a disposable asset to the Democrats. The Democrats will use and abuse for the next two years with no downside. Specter will either support the agenda or he will be a loose cannon and really not matter just as if he was a Republican. Specter probably won’t get re-elected but if he does it’s all a bonus to his new found ideology.
