Swine Flu… Another Over Hyped Media Event

The Swine Flu pandemic or what your favorite news organization calls it, has allegedly killed 83 Mexicans and sickened 1400 more who are also Mexican. Source: MSNBC

A pandemic is a global outbreak of disease that occurs when a new virus emerges in the human population, causes serious illness, and then spreads easily from person to person worldwide. Pandemics are different from seasonal outbreaks or “epidemics” of influenza. Seasonal outbreaks are caused by subtypes of influenza viruses that already circulate among people, whereas pandemic outbreaks are caused by new subtypes, by subtypes that have never circulated among people, or by subtypes that have not circulated among people for a long time. Past pandemics have led to high levels of illness, death, social disruption, and economic loss. Source: Pennsylvania Pandemic Center

The News is trying to sell news by panicking the public by printing/broadcasting this crap. Did you know that in 2007 12,998 people were killed in the USA by drunk drivers? Source: MADD That is 35.61 people a day or 498 in the 14 days since the “Swine Flu Pandemic” has killed 83 Mexicans. Aren’t pandemics supposed to kill more? As far as a flu pandemic there have only been 3 outbreaks in the last hundred years that are considered pandemic.

  1. Hong Kong Flu Pandemic 1968 -1969 Killed 750,000 to 1,000,000 people
  2. Asian Flu 1957-1958 Killed 1,000,000 to 1,500,000
  3. Spanish Flu 1918–20 Killed approximately 40 million

There have been only 20 cases confirmed Swine Flu in the United States according to the Center of Disease Control and 0 deaths. This means it’s NOT a pandemic.

Swine Flu Panic is seen in real time on Twitter

I think the media is making it worse than it really is. Just like the avian virus a few years ago, the media scares you because of a few suffered. But yes, if you are sick avoid spreading your germs. In this case, not sharing is caring.

I think the whole called “Swine flu” is made to be a big deal then it really is. People die from other causes and we dont freak out about it. We already get a flu and we dont panic like people are now. The news has nothing better to talk about these days but to cause more stress and crap to us. I believe we should not worry and treat this as a regular flu. Its curable not to worry. and it isnt spreading at a fast rate ethier like the news says. Like the article says here, people die from cancer and aids and stuff. We should be more worried about looking for cures for that than anything else right now. People die from that ALOT more than the “Swine Flu”.

And no one notices that the House passed a $3.4 trillion dollar budget while everyone is standing in line to purchase face masks.

What a great hoax. My friend and I are wondering what the next animal related flu will be. My bet is on the hipopotomous flu outbreak in the local zoo.
