Music is Not Dead

I don’t know when exactly it started nor do I remember how it came about but there was a period of about 2 years where the music had died. I had become disinterested and bored with it all. The radio failed to inspire me to even turn it on in the car during my 40 minute commute. The local radio stations had given into the man. The radio played what pays them the most. It is a business after all but what the bean counters fail to realize is that music isn’t just about the Benjamin’s. It’s about the expression and sharing of a common feeling. It’s the passion. For memory music is often closely tied to memory. Music had become mundane. In addition to not using my radio, I had stopped playing guitar for the last year or so. I had slowly evolved into my father and turned on AM Talk radio. It was bad and I needed help. Never had music failed to inspire me.

I mentioned in a previous post that getting a Sirius Satellite radio for Christmas had perked my interest in music. I had rediscovered a variety of new and old music that rejuvenated my love of music. So in March as I was resurrected from the death of music, I bought myself a guitar. I bought a Gibson Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Electric Guitar with a Crate V32 Palomino 30W Class-A Tube Combo Amp and a DigiTech RP350 Modeling Guitar Processor.

Gibson Les Paul StudioAs part of the process of emerging from my music coma, I decided to start taking guitar lessons. So far so good… and I love my teacher. It is the funniest thing I do all week. I wish that I had purchased an electric and started lessons years ago.

Lately instead of downloading songs I use Youtube as a juke box. I have included some of my favorites below.

Only You -Yazoo

Ceremony -Joy Division

My Girlfriend’s Dead -The Vandals

Highway to Hell -AC/DC
I love Bon Scott’s voice and the introduction of the AC DC classic sound.

The Jack -AC/DC

Mr. Tambourine Man -Bob Dylan
I love the asking for a harmonica and the audience has several.

Tangled Up in Blue -Bob Dylan
This is one of my favorite Dylan tunes

Jessica –The Allman Brothers

Life's Been Good (MTV Unplugged) -Joe Walsh

Behind Blue Eyes -The Who

WOLD -Harry Chapin

If You Could Read My Mind -Gordon Lightfoot

Wichita Lineman Glen Campbell & The Stone Temple Pilots

Northern Sky – Nick Drake

Pink Moon –Nick Drake
This is the commercial that was in development while working on the VW website and it started my love of Nick’s music.

Why I don’t Paint People -Bob Ross
This video just made me laugh.

November Rain (acoustic demo) –Guns & Roses
This is just a cool sounding demo.

Hey Ya (Outkast Cover) -Obadiah Parker
This guy deserves a link to his music. Obadiah Parker

Fade to Black (acoustic) -Metallica

Four Horseman (acoustic) -Metallica
The video sucks but the sound is good.

Yngwie Malmsteen Acoustic Guitar

Everlong (Acoustic) -Foo Fighters
I have always loved this song in the acoustic form. I original obtained it through Napster back in the day.

Stairway to Heaven (acoustic cover) –Foo Fighters
The solo is awesome as is Dave forgetting the lyrics and making them up or asking the audience. I love it an artist that is not to concerned with his image. Very Funny..

Tiny Dancer (acoustic cover)–Dave Grohl
Again a great cover that’s pretty funny. This is my favorite Elton John song

Tiny Dancer –Elton John

Improvisation by Elton John
Interesting seeing Elton write a song from the manual for an Oven.

Born to Run (acoustic) –Bruce Springsteen

California Dreaming - Michael Chapdelaine
Incredible playing

Redemption Song –Bob Marley

Overkill (acoustic from Park City TV) –Colin Hay (Men at Work)

Friend of the Devil (acoustic cover) –Counting Crows

I have wasted days and days listening to music on Youtube.

Enjoy…

Where Has All The Music Gone...

Every now and then a song just sticks and it is forever stuck in your mind. Over the last 3 months I have heard this song almost everyday on Sirius Satelite Radio… I love it and will be buying the album soon.

Somewhere over the last few years music has become boring to me. Very few new artists and songs really hit home. Over the last 4 months I have had Sirius I have rediscovered music. I first I couldn’t believe that my wife would buy me a satellite radio nor did I think that I should pay $150 a year to listen. In just a few short months however I have become a fan. The variety is incredible and it is so refreshing not to have endless commercials and radio lame radio dj’s who aren’t funny blathering on about nothing. I don’t think that it was that I was tired of adding new music to my collection as so much as the local radio stations were beating the hell out of crappy songs.

I have spent much of the last 10 years listening to 101.9/107.9 The End and over the last year they have really begun to suck big… My advice to them is to return to the early days. Play music people used to love to hear you play, Example like new wave, alternative etc. You’re A to Z weekends used to be awesome because you played all the great things hidden in your collection. Unfortunately You have played to death Cold Play and John Mayer… Return to 80’s and 90’s classics mixed with new stuff but not the same new stuff that every other damn radio station in Utah is playing. Another free piece of advice FIRE Chelsea… SHE SUCKS, She isn’t funny and has ruined the Chunga and Mister Show. Every time she comes on the show I change the dial. She sucks… and is a fun killer. I must commend Tyson Web the other day when I peaked in for a visit he played Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt”. It was quite refreshing. Too bad his co-host some “Britney wanna-be” girl had never heard of it nor of the Nine Inch Nails version. That just might be the problem hiring DJ’s who have no musical experience in your station’s genre. Until 101.9 The End changes I will be listening to the New Wave and ALT Nation Stations of Sirius.

For those who are interested..

Plain White T’s "Hey There Delilah"
Hear the song and See the Video Here

Hey there Delilah
What's it like in New York City?
I'm a thousand miles away
But girl tonight you look so pretty
Yes you do
Time Square can't shine as bright as you
I swear it's true

Hey there Delilah
Don't you worry about the distance
I'm right there if you get lonely
Give this song another listen
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice it's my disguise
I'm by your side

Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
What you do to me

Hey there Delilah
I know times are getting hard
But just believe me girl
Someday I'll pay the bills with this guitar
We'll have it good
We'll have the life we knew we would
My word is good

Hey there Delilah
I've got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away
I'd write it all
Even more in love with me you'd fall
We'd have it all

Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me

A thousand miles seems pretty far
But they've got planes and trains and cars
I'd walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us
and we'll just laugh along because we know
That none of them have felt this way
Delilah I can promise you
That by the time we get through
The world will never ever be the same
And you're to blame

Hey there Delilah
You be good and don't you miss me
Two more years and you'll be done with school
And I'll be making history like I do
You know it's all because of you
We can do whatever we want to
Hey there Delilah here's to you
This ones for you

Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
What you do to me.
